The fact that it is based on another song does not mean that his arrangement is any less his own work. He merely took inspiration from elsewhere and used it to write an amazing song of his own. Besides, he did much more than cover/layer it on guitar. He altered many of the passages to a great extent. Saying that Canon Rock (note: it's canon, not cannon, one n) is not his is like saying a kid is not the offspring of their parents because they also contain genes from their ancestors.
