Im pretty sure parents loved this show because it sent a great message: Eating your spinach makes you strong. Popeye is the best. It never gets old.

A lot of people like this movie for many good reasons. It's charming and fun to watch. It was also surprisingly accurate to the comic. It was unfortunately the musical version and not the straight comic version. It was released at the same time whereabouts of some giant megablockbuster which also helped to kill its audience turnout.

He has said it was his least favorite movie. There are many people though who love it alot. I like to think that if you made a movie based on a cartoon, you make it look like one, sound like on and get actors who look like their characters, but never draw attention to the fact that it is supposed to be a cartoon. This movie did that very well.

I second that. This is my only favorite version of Popeye the Sailor Man. It just sounded so wonderful and catchy, and the choral arrangement enhanced it. The instrumentation too.

I think the song at the end was the best song out of the whole movie. This is by far one of Robin's best performances ever. Siskel and Ebert were right about giving two thumbs up. I feel that this movie has been underrated and unappreciated. Damn critics.

This film did not do well because it was based on Segar's "Thimble Theatre Starring Popeye' strip of the 1930's--which audiences didn't know in 1980. A live-action film based on the Fleischer animated cartoons may have done better. Plus, most of the songs are awful and Popeye NEVER hated spinach.
